Do you find it tough to motivate yourself to do a workout even though it would make you feel so much better? One of the biggest problems my clients have is finding the motivation to stay consistent with their workouts.
Years ago I did a video about how using motivation to stay consistent with your workouts (and anything you want to accomplish) doesn’t work over the long term. We think we need to be motivated to do it but here’s the deal…most likely we will never FEEL like doing it and we allow that to stop us from taking action.
Then we beat ourselves up about it and go outside ourselves to find something or someone who can “motivate” us to do what we know we need to do.
My solution was not to wait to feel motivated. You don’t stop to think about it. You just DO it. Make an appointment with yourself to do a class and treat that appointment like any other important appointment in your life. It’s not negotiable. You don’t stop to think about whether you FEEL like doing it.
My guess is you don’t FEEL like brushing your teeth every night but you do it anyway. You don’t always FEEL like doing other tasks during the day that need to be done, but you do them anyway.
Over the weekend, I was on youtube and I saw a video of Mel Robbins. It was titled “The Secret To Motivation/ One of the best speeches ever”. As I looked down the list of recommended videos, I could see that Mel was pretty popular. She’s done a lot of videos and even though I’ve never heard of her, it appears she has been very successful sharing her version of how to get things done.
I took the time to watch this video. She is very entertaining, and I enjoyed hearing her story of going from near bankruptcy to making her big comeback. The helpful information she shared was the very simple rule she used to go from being extremely depressed and staying in bed most of the day to rocketing her butt out of bed and into action.
One night before going to sleep she saw a picture on TV of a rocket launching. That picture inspired her. She told herself the next morning when it was time to get up, she wasn’t going to think about whether she should get out of bed. Instead she was going to see herself on the launch pad. Count backwards from 5 to 1 and launch herself out of bed and into action.
That’s exactly what she did and it worked.
All throughout the day when it was time to do something she didn’t want to do, she immediately counted 5,4,3,2,1 and launched herself into the action.
This simple exercise completely transformed her life. She went on to write books, become a motivational speaker…
Darn it! I wish I would have gone from “just do it” to the 5 second rule too. I could be on the national speaking circuit. Okay…here I go..5,4,3,2,1…
Having found out how well this simple technique worked not just for her but for other people she shared it with, she began doing a lot of study about how the brain works. It is worth taking the time to either listen to her videos or read her book.
For right now though, just use the method. When you know there is something you need to do, don’t stop to negotiate with yourself. Don’t stop to think about whether you should or shouldn’t do it. If you stop for more than 5 seconds, you won’t do it.
Instead…get on the launch pad. Count 5,4,3,2,1 and get into action right away!!!! If you wait past the 5 seconds, you won’t do it. That’s how our crazy brains are wired. This is a great simple yet powerful way to hack your brain.
The “5 second rule” WORKS! But just like any other technique designed to help up improve our lives…we still have to DO IT!!!!
Try it, share it and let me know how it works for you!
