You have finally committed to losing weight. You picked a diet you felt you could do. You are doing it!!!! You are losing weight! Congratulation to you! You are feeling good about yourself.
So far…so good.
Then you go to a party and people who never paid any attention to you before (when you were heavier) all of a sudden notice you. They come over and start talking to you. Men who wouldn’t give you the time of day start to show interest in you. You would think this would make you happy, but instead it really pisses you off. “I am the same person I was when I was heavier” you think “and you never noticed me before!” Now all of a sudden you feel you are “being seen”. This scenario can not only make you angry but it can also trigger some fear.
Maybe being heavier allowed you to “stay small”. And as you got small, you felt like you needed to come out and play bigger. But that is scary and maybe you aren’t ready to do that. An interesting place to find yourself. And one that can trigger some powerful emotions you might be surprised by.
If you aren’t addressing the emotional components of losing weight, you might very well find yourself in situations that will trigger you to run back to food for the comfort and security it has provided you in the past. It makes logical sense so please don’t beat yourself up about it.
Instead, stay very mindful about what emotions are coming up for you as you move into these new situations. If you are feeling angry, begin to ask yourself what inside you is being triggered to anger. If you feel scared by it, what inside you is being triggered to feel fear and what is the fear about.
Most of the time, there are powerful subconscious beliefs at play here that are rearing their ugly heads. Subconscious beliefs are responsible for over 95% of all our attitudes, values AND behaviors. So if you want to get past these triggers and continue to move forward to your goals, it is crucial you learn how to talk to your subconscious and then change the ones that are getting in your way.
