Take a moment right now to notice how you are feeling in your body. Do a body scan starting with the top of your head and work your way down your body noticing all the places you are holding tension.
Now “try” to relax. Isn’t it interesting that it’s actually harder to relax your body than it is to activate and work your muscles? Why is it we need to “try” to simply relax our body? I believe it’s because we are always on the go, driving forward in our lives, taking care of everyone else, stressed out and tired. But even when we are tired, it can be a challenge to simply…relax.
We even have a hard time relaxing enough to go to sleep and often have to resort to drinking our evening wine or taking sleeping pills.
We can use the power of our mind-body connection to learn to relax our body and then watch how that body relaxation can shift how we show up in our life.
Start your day with this “slow roll down stretch.” Finish with the loose shoulder rolls and a few deep belly breaths. Notice how you feel. Now begin your day with that nice relaxed posture. When you start to feel your body tensing up again, get up and do another roll down. Notice how, as your body releases it’s tension, you start to breath deeper. Your brain waves slow down and you are able to become more present and alive.
Stress is the number one cause of dis-ease. We are all under stress every day! Our nervous system is always in “fight or flight” mode. Even when we aren’t “moving”, the tension we are holding in our bodies are causing constriction of our breathing, limiting our ability to make good decisions and sapping us of our energy and our joy.
Focusing on simply relaxing our body is such an easy activity we can do on a daily basis to enjoy it’s profound positive benefits.
I hope you find this quick, simple but powerful “roll down” stretch to be one of the health habits you incorporate into your day!
