Did your parents teach you to finish everything on your plate? Did you grow up in an “eat because there are starving children in the world” family?
I did. I learned to eat everything on my plate. I don’t even think about it. If it is served to me on a plate, I eat it all. How about you?
Scientific studies have proven how common this is. If it’s on our plate…we eat it.
In one study, researchers at Cornell University offered a free lunch to a group of students for several weeks. The students didn’t realize it but everything they were eating was being weighed and measured.
Over the course of the study, researchers kept increasing the portions of soup, bread sticks, pasta and ice cream they served. But no matter how much was served… if it was on the plate, the students ate it all.
No matter how much we’d like to deny it…portions matter when it comes to losing weight and maintaining that weight loss.
I don’t know about you but I find portion-control really hard to do. Again…if it’s on my plate I’m going to eat it all.
So I needed to find ways to make portion control as effortless as possible. This is why I love using portion-controlled fuelings during my day. These fuelings make it effortless to eat exactly how much (with the perfect balance for blood sugar control) I need throughout the day. Open it, eat it, done!
What other tools can you use to make portion-control effortless?
Dr. Wayne Andersen, in his fantastic book called Dr. A’s Habits of Health, recommends using a 9” plate. This is smaller than the dinner plates we are using now.
Just starting with a smaller plate can help us reduce our portions without having to resort to a whole bunch of willpower. Willpower doesn’t work long-term. Smaller portions on smaller plates does!!!
